Friday Roundup (of News and Thoughts and Such) - February 18th Edition

Welcome to the Friday Roundup (of News and Thoughts and Such) which, at four consecutive weeks, is channel.WAV’s longest running and most prestigious column, in which I, Brandon Slone, the Pauline Kael of channel.WAV, talk about some of the week’s biggest stories that we didn’t cover in long form this week. Let’s dive into this week’s news.

1. How about that Super Bowl Halftime Show?

We already talked about this at length in an article that’ll be linked rightchere, but the Halftime show really was the biggest story of the week. It gave us everything we could have wanted, including memes about upside down 50 Cent. Also I didn’t mention last week that Snoop Dogg bought Death Row, so yeah. Also also we didn’t get new Kendrick. Also also also Rudy Giuliani is mad at Eminem for kneeling.

2. Coachella drops COVID policies

Coachella announced earlier this week that it would be dropping all COVID-related restrictions for attendees at this year’s festival. Thus, fans will not be required to present proof of vaccination or negative tests, nor will they be required to wear masks. Is it too soon? Is it not soon enough? 100% of the 7 people reading this have very strong opinions about both of these questions.

3. Major artists announce releases for Record Store Day

This year’s slate of Record Store Day releases has been announced and includes releases from Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves, U2, and, most importantly, Angelo Badalamenti, whose classic soundtrack to Blue Velvet will be getting a deluxe edition release.

4. LAWSUITS!!!

A couple of stories relating to the legal side of things. First, more seriously, the mother of Lil Peep cleared the first hurdle in her wrongful death suit against the late rapper’s management company, as the trial judge ruled that she had shown a sufficient causal connection between the company’s negligence and her son’s death to allow the suit to continue. More hilariously, DaBaby, who I think was still popular this time last year in spite of being like 30 and calling himself DaBaby, is being sued over what has been dubbed a “bowling alley brawl.”

What’s channel.WAV listening to this week?

Slone: Been listening to some Elliott Smith today. Am I okay?

Ritter: Big Thief’s album Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You came out last week, and it is astonishing! A diverse offering of sounds from track-to-track. One of the best albums in recent memory.

Botts: I’ve been blasting channel, ORANGE as I walk in my Nikes. Oh wait that can’t be right… I’ve been blasting Blonde as I contemplate my Sweet Life. Damn, that can’t be right either. Well, you get it. But for real, my favorite (and everyone else’s except for Dane Ritter even though his dog is named after the song) is “Forrest Gump.” Am I right or is Dane? Let us know in the comments below!
