Staff Inspection: The 2022 Super Bowl Half-Time Show

It's been dubbed the biggest stage in music, and this year felt particularly special. It was to be the first completely hip-hop Super Bowl half-time show. So we couldn't miss out! Once again, the staff here at channel.WAV gathered together (virtually) to discuss Dr. Dre's superstar team of West Coast legends (and Eminem), as well as the much-anticipated return of one Kendrick Lamar.

Unfortunately, only two thirds of our staff could watch live, but we've provided some  brief after-the-show thoughts to fill in the void.

Read on, fearless reader, where we aim to answer the question, "how much can could a Kendrick can, if a Kendrick could can candrick?"

On "The Next Episode" and "California Love"...

Ritter: I read they censored Snoop’s outfit (among other things) because it was promoting gang affiliation but the giant blue bandana suit is clearly still there.

Botts: Classic intro. Bets on Will Ferrell streaking across the field?

R: *"California Love" begins playing* This would be a fantastic time for a TuPac hologram...

B: Or a real TuPac entrance?

B: "West coast make some noise", but it's an East coast field advantage? Madness!

On a surprise 50 Cent performance...

R: They brought 50!!

B: 50!!!

R: The sheer core strength on this man.

B: Is it a mirror or is he 'bout to pass out...? Glad to see 50 (finally) won the Kanye PR battle.

On Mary J. Blige...

R: Mary J. Blige looking great but sounding even better. And I must say, this live, in-house band was an incredible choice.

B: Me gusta mucho. Didn't Jennifer Lopez wear the same thing, though?

R: Kinda looked like a Beyoncé fit...

On the King's return and NFL censorship...

R: Kendrick looking fly, too!

B: Another iconic entrance and image. This is phenomenal, but if they've already gone this long, how much will we hear of Eminem?

R: The censorship of Kendrick is stoopid.

B: Yep.

R: God forbid you say shit about police on TV.

On Eminem...

B: Detroit finally made it to the Super Bowl!

R: He's sounded the worse so far. Anderson .Paak on the drums, though!

B: Another Tiny Desk performance?

R: Seeing MJ and 50 hanging on the couch was adorable.

Final thoughts (and a Brandon Slone wrap-up)...

B: So SpongeBob is gonna take the field after this, right?

R: That was way too short, man. But the best half-time show in my memory.

B👍👍

SloneAbout the contents of the show, I do not have much to say. I would just like to say that I appreciate that it actually felt like a show that was tailored to the location, which meant that when you got surprises they felt like surprises that made sense to get excited about instead of course correction.

So you got some huge names associated with LA/California and it meant that if you wanna throw in Eminem (announced) or 50 Cent (unannounced) who are decidedly not from California, it’s still a thing worth getting excited about because they are least associated with the LA artists.

Compare to something like the Maroon 5 Atlanta debacle, featuring Big Boi for no reason other than to say “see, we do care!” Or, God forbid, the Justin Timberlake/Prince disaster.
