Fresh Friday - October 7th, 2022

I planted two trees this week and then read a book about a woman who turns into a tree, my arms are throbbing while typing this. I think I’d like to become a tree.

Fun music fact of the week: Aaron Botts invented his own jazz guitar chord, also known as "the secret chord" that Leonard Cohen dreamt of then sang about in "Hallelujah." He'd teach you the chord but you have to grow a sixth finger.

New music! Below!

Albums/EPs

Alvvays - Blue Rev:

I always remember the albums that make me a fan, and I think this is the one for Alvvays.

Quavo & Takeoff - Only Built For Infinity Links:

So the Migos drama continues — it seems the group split has been confirmed as happening due to Offset sleeping with Quavo’s ex, Saweetie. Quavo says as much on one of these tracks. Wow.

Joyce Wrice - Motives EP:

If you need something to dance to this weekend, look no further.

Broken Bells - INTO THE BLUE:

A great return! Danger Mouse for producer of the year.

Jean Dawson - CHAOS NOW*:

How this dude became popular I am unaware, but “PORN ACTING*” is one of my fave songs of the year.

WILLOW - <COPINGMECHANISM>:

It’s great to see Willow coming into her own as an artist and truly establishing her sound and image. I feel like this is an even better offering than her first album.

DJ Muggs & Crimeapple - Sin Cortar:

Muggs is one of my favorite producers, and he and Crime never cease to impress. Whataduo.

Singles/Videos

Hozier - "Swan Upon Leda":

I thought about leaving this as the only song in this section it’s so beautiful and moving. All proceeds will be donated towards groups advocating for women’s rights to choose.

Jazmine Sullivan - "Stand Up":

While I won’t be watching this movie, I will always listen to some new Jazmine.

thuy - "girls like me don't cry":

Some silky R&B pop courtesy of this up and coming artist!

Kali Uchis - "La Unica":

We stan.

Kali - "Bout U":

A different Kali! If you’ve never heard “MMHMM” please do yourself a favor.

Jamila Woods - "Boundaries":

Jamila’s voice is so astounding, and the instrumentation is a nice shake up of her usual wind.
