Friday Roundup (of News & Thoughts & Such) - August 5th, 2022

Last week, I forgot to take out the “Jiminy Christmas, what a week” from the Roundup from the week prior. No, this was not an attempt at a new catchphrase. None of you caught it, however, or I am sure that you would have said so in the comment section which, I will note, has been especially barren of late. Do better. Be better. For me. For all of us. Mostly for me.

1. Beyonce removes lyrics:

You will recall recently that Lizzo removed a lyric from a song recently due to concerns of ableism. Beyonce has now followed course. Beyonce has also removed the “Milkshake” sample from the album after Kelis voiced her displeasure. Monica Lewinsky has now asked for lyrics referencing her to be removed as well.

2. Diane Warren wades into a firestorm:

After asking a self-described “sincere” question about how a song can have 24 writers, Warren received a continuous and ongoing online roasting regarding sampling, collaboration, and compensation.

3. Guy Fieri rages against the machine:

I laughed.

4. Young Money reunion postponed after Drake tests positive for COVID-19:

Pretty self-explanatory, this.

5. Mystikal arrested:

Mystikal, 52, was arrested on charges including first degree rape, domestic abuse battery, and false imprisonment. He is already registered as a sex offender following a 2004 incident in which he pled guilty to sexual assault of a hairstylist. A second alleged incident occurred in 2017 when he was arrested for rape. Those charges were ultimately dropped.

6. Tom DeLonge is not in blink-182:

After DeLonge posted a photo of himself with his former bandmates, Mark Hoppus took to the internet to announce that “There is no announcement” as relating to DeLonge’s status with the band.

7. Music Midtown canceled:

In what is without question the most significant music news of the week, Atlanta’s Music Midtown festival, which was scheduled for September, has been canceled. The reasoning for the cancelation stems from Georgia gun laws, which guarantee the right to carry a firearm on public land. With the festival being held in a public park, festival organizers were prohibited from banning weapons from the event. This, of course, is the logical endpoint of governing based on owning the libs with no rhyme or reason behind your decision-making. Fucking idiotic.

What’s channel.WAV listening to this week?

Ritter: Last week, I listened to all of Beyonce’s discography and forgot about the hidden gem of “I Miss You.” Coincidentally, it was written by Frank Ocean and there is only one recording of him performing it live.

Slone: I barely listened to music this week, so instead let me regale you with a thinkpiece concerning the work of one Brian McKnight. In his 2001 classic “Back at One”, McKnight provides us with 5 steps. The issue here is that only step 5 is undisputedly a step. Step 4 is arguably a step but it’s really not.

1. You’re like a dream come true (not a step)

2. Just wanna be with you (not a step)

3. Girl, it’s plain to see that you’re the only one for me (not a step)

4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 (this is arguably a step, but being that steps 1-3 are not themselves steps, repetition of same would be difficult if not impossible)

5. Make you fall in love with me (this is a step. It is a vague, meaningless step most likely involving dozens if not hundreds of additional sub-steps, but it is a step)

That being said, please enjoy “Red Rock Riviera” by Sea Power.

Botts: HAIM, if you need help call me.

  2. As a regular cryer, crying during La La Land is pretty embarrassing. So I’m gonna lock in “I hope not”
