Fresh Friday - June 17th, 2022

Some big names have promised music soon, and this Friday we got a huge surprise drop... how did it measure up? Read on for our quick selection of new albums, singles, and music videos out NOW!

Drake - Honestly, Nevermind.:

Around 5:30PM yesterday, Drake announced he'd be debuting his seventh studio album at midnight last night. There was next to no information surrounding the release, but as the night unfolded, rumors swirled that it was a house/dancehall-infused sound with only one feature. It turned out to be true.

While I admire Drake for finally switching up the sound (the beats are incredible), the lyrics and his vocals are absolutely forgettable. You can switch any of the lyrics for any song around, and nothing would change. He sings in one register the entire album.

Rant over. You can watch the pretty funny video for his forgettable lead single, "Falling Back," above. And enjoy these Reddit comment standouts below:

Bartees Strange - Farm to Table:

I have no clue how to classify Bartees Strange's sound, but it is mesmerizing. This will undoubtedly be in rotation for the rest of the year.

Flying Lotus - "the Room/You Don't Know":

These songs sound like summer, and it's been far too long since we've been blessed with new FlyLo.

Chance the Rapper - "the Highs & the Lows (feat. Joey Bada$$":

We're still singed from the disaster of The Big Day, but Chance is slowly making it up to us, via this awesome song.

Also, Joey Bada$$ was supposed to give us a new album today, but I guess he caught wind of that new Drake slop.

Flo Milli - "Conceited":

Flo Milli has been on an incredible run since she went viral during the early days of the pandemic, and "Conceited" is no exception.

Steve Lacy - "Mercury":

All I can think of after hearing this song is that one tweet that went semi-viral about how they were tired of "Steve Lacy synth dominating R&B." Seems as though Steve has changed up his sound (and it worked!).

Perfume Genius - Ugly Season:

The release of this album has been in production for a few years, originally beginning as an accompaniment to an immersive dance piece from 2019, and now acting as the soundtrack to a short film. It's pretty good.

Westside Boogie - MORE BLACK SUPERHEROES:

Shady's artist, formerly known as Boogie, is just now following up his 2019 album (which took forever to come out then, too). He's got a great sound, but between the name change and the length in hiatus, I feel as though he's lost some momentum.

Conway the Machine - What Has Been Blessed Cannot Be Cursed:

Not only does Conway have one of the best pens in the game right now, he's also got an insane knack for naming his albums. Fricking great. It should be on Spotify next week, if you don't want to give Bandcamp/Fortnite money.

Kendrick Lamar - A Day In Ghana:

Not necessarily new music, but it is nice to see this mini-doc (can we even call it that?) via Spotify about what Kenny's been up to since the album release. He looks really really healthy, and I'm happy for him.
