Friday Roundup (of News & Thoughts & Such) - May 20th

I think I’ve probably billed like 80 hours this week and that means it’s time for the Friday Roundup (of News and Thoughts and Such). What am I even gonna talk about? I told Dane that I had started writing this an hour ago… I just started writing it. I hope he doesn’t see this.

Editor's note: I saw this.

1. That new Harry Styles dropped:

I listened to it. I like it. I don’t know if I like it as much as Harry likes David Bowie. But I like it.

2. Diana Ross x Tame Impala:

Sometimes I am gathering the headlines for these and I see a story that just makes me assume that Rolling Stone has been hacked. This is one such story, as Diana Ross and Tame Impala have at long last graced us with the collab track we have all been waiting for, “Turn Up the Sunshine,” which will appear on the soundtrack of the new Minions movie. To quote Rob Reiner’s second best movie, “Life is pain, highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.” Rob Reiner’s best movie is Stand By Me, FYI.

3. Lizzo documentary premiering in fall:

There’s not a lot to say about this. It’s neat, though. It’s called About Damn Time. I can dig it.

4. Neil Patrick Harris did WHAT?:

In this week’s “why did this happen,” I learned that Neil Patrick Harris apologized this week after pictures emerged of “a meat platter designed to look like Amy Winehouse’s decaying corpse” that he had apparently served at a party in 2011. I say this a lot but I genuinely find famous people are most likely devoid of the most basic of human empathy.

5. Notorious BIG formally becomes King of New York:

To honor his 50th birthday, the Empire State Building will display special lights complete with a “spinning crown.” Christopher Walken could not be reached for comment. I tried. Was gonna DM him on Twitter but then I found out he doesn’t have a Twitter.

6. There’s a Gorillaz tour:

I mean this with the utmost sincerity, how is a tour from a virtual band different from just watching vids on YouTube? Are there people whose favorite part of concerts is the sweaty neckbeard asking his friend if he’s ever heard “the original version” when the song in question is Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’”?

I’m really tired and accidentally lost a lot of work just now which is doubly impressive because this is a Google doc and I thought that was literally impossible, so we’re gonna call it here for now.

We got 2 comments last week, which equates to 2 compliments, per the channel.WAV bylaws, which live in a text thread from 2 months ago. So here we go.

“Kelli C.” You have a winning personality.

“Longmire” You seem cool.

Look at that. Deeply personal, from the heart, compliments from yours truly. I bare my soul for this blog, y’all.

What’s channel.WAV listening to this week?

Ritter: What am I to say? I’ve been listening to Kendrick’s new album this entire week. I forgot other music existed for a bit. Anyway, here’s friend of the blog Ricki Monique’s new and fantastic EP!

Botts: My wardrobe stylist played this as I was leaving my fitting. Was she giving me a sign?

Slone: The correct answer is the new Kendrick, which has several songs that have found their way into my constant rotation. But I’m not going to talk about that today. Instead I am going to talk about the undisputed greatest pop song ever written: Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now.” It’s a testament to humanity’s perseverance that any music at all has come out since 1987, knowing that it would get compared to this masterpiece. Some of our greatest minds, the Kendrick Lamars, the Frank Oceans, they spend years crafting albums and just can’t measure up. Maybe some day. But I doubt it. I’m so tired.
