Friday Roundup (of News & Thoughts & Such) - May 6th

Welcome to the Friday Roundup (of News and Thoughts and Such) which, at some number of consecutive weeks, is channel.WAV’s longest running and most prestigious column. Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwws.

1. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees announced:

Congratulations are in order to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2022.

Carly Simon (singer of the third best Bond theme of all time)

Dolly Parton

Duran Duran

Eminem

Eurhythmics

Lionel Richie

Pat Benatar

Probably the most notable inclusion here is Dolly, who of course publicly “bowed out” of the nominating process a few months ago, feeling that she did not satisfy the appropriate “rock and roll” criteria. Earlier this week she walked back that statement, saying that she would happily accept an induction, telling NPR, “It was always my belief that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was for the people in rock music, and I have found out lately that it’s not necessarily that.” If this was not already apparent, it is abundantly clear from this year’s class, which has, as usual, set off the very worst people on the internet, who are entirely too invested in whether Rage Against the Machine gets an induction.

It remains to be seen if Tim Commerford will climb the scaffolding at the induction ceremony.

2. Kendrick update; double album?:

As we await Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers (due out next Friday, May 13), the Pulitzer-winning rapper (it still feels so good typing that) is pushing the hype machine into overdrive. This week, a post appeared on oklama.com, the site set up to be the only “factual” source of information concerning the album, showing two burnt CDs, labeled “Morale” and “Steppers”, respectively. The “Steppers” CD pictured bears an additional visible caption reading “Master copy” and it is presumable that the “Morale” CD bears the same. The implication here: we are dealing with a double album, in the vein of OutKast’s classic Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. Also pictured: a book.

We are all obviously very excited about this, but we should also not lose sight of what is truly important: .NATION, the second half of DAMN., will presumably drop any minute now.

3. Stagecoach music festival bans Confederate flags, racist imagery:

The Stagecoach country music festival quietly added an addendum to its rules for festival-goers banning “divisive symbols, including , without limitation, Confederate flags and racially disparaging or other inappropriate imagery/public displays.” A nice move, to be sure.

Let’s play a game:

This was a busy-ish week and there’s more stories that I don’t want to write about. So, which of the following headlines is false:

A. Megan Fox claims to have “manifested” Machine Gun Kelly when she was 4 years old

B. Anderson .Paak will be directing a comedy drama film

C. Lizzo announced a residency tour, including stops in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Austin

Answer correctly in the comments for a chance to win Dane’s prized racehorse, which is favored for the Kentucky Derby!

What’s channel.WAV listening to this week?

Ritter: I revisited Japanese Breakfast’s first album this week, and I definitely think it’s her best project. Until I listen to Jubilee again, of course.

Botts: Who doesn’t like alliteration with their country music stars? Enjoy Travis Tritt’s “It’s a Great Day To Be Alive.”

Slone: Continuing my recent Steinbeck enjoyment, I humbly submit Bruce Springsteen’s “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” specifically, the live version with Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, performed at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (my column is like The Wire: all the pieces fit), featuring an absolutely bonkers guitar solo.

In addition, I think Hunter inadvertently got me into math rock?

Naomi Judd passes away:

In sadder news, which needs to be addressed, Naomi Judd, matriarch of the Judd family, best known as one half of The Judds with her daughter Wynonna, died by suicide on April 30, after a long and very public battle with mental illness. Give your favorite Judds tune a spin this weekend and keep the family in your thoughts.

What's the name of Dane's prized racehorse? Only real fans will let us know in the comments below. And don't forget your chance to win the horse itself! COMMENT.

  1. I believe the incorrect answer is C, mysterious blogger named Slone. 'Tis Harold Styles' residency tour. I see that Dane's racehorse, Bombay Tricycle Club: The Three-Legged Wonder, did not win the Derby, so y'all can keep it.
