Grammys 2022: The Aftermath

There were some winners, but there were a whole lot of LOSERS, including everyone who tuned in -- the Grammys were last night! Let's catch up on who won the big four categories, and which of the channel.WAV staff were correct in their predictions!

BEST NEW ARTIST

Nominees:

  • Arooj Aftab
  • Jimmie Allen
  • Baby Keem
  • FINNEAS
  • Glass Animals
  • Japanese Breakfast
  • The Kid LAROI
  • Arlo Parks
  • Olivia Rodrigo
  • Saweetie
Winner: Olivia Rodrigo

Correct: For the second year in a row, all three of us picked the winner. This was easy mode, and proved to be the only category of the year that we were all correct, and the only correct guess for Aaron and Brandon. Uh oh...

SONG OF THE YEAR

Nominees:

  • Ed Sheeran - "Bad Habits"
  • Alicia Keys & Brandi Carlile - "A Beautiful Noise"
  • Olivia Rodrigo - "drivers license"
  • H.E.R. - "Fight For You"
  • Billie Eilish - "Happier Than Ever"
  • Silk Sonic - "Leave the Door Open"
  • Brandi Carlile - "Right on Time"
  • Doja Cat - "Kiss Me More (feat. SZA)"
  • Lil Nas X - "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)"
  • Justin Bieber - "Peaches (feat. Daniel Caesar & Giveon)"
Winner: Silk Sonic - "Leave the Door Open"

Correct: I pulled through on this one! But it's all downhill from here...

RECORD OF THE YEAR

Nominees:

  • ABBA - "I Still Have Faith In You"
  • Jon Batiste - "Freedom"
  • Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga - "I Get A Kick Out of You"
  • Justin Bieber - "Peaches (feat. Daniel Caesar & Giveon)"
  • Brandi Carlile - "Right on Time"
  • Doja Cat - "Kiss Me More (feat. SZA)"
  • Billie Eilish - "Happier Than Ever"
  • Lil Nas X - "Montero (Call Me By Your Name)"
  • Olivia Rodrigo - "drivers license"
  • Silk Sonic - "Leave the Door Open"
Winner: Silk Sonic - "Leave the Door Open"

Correct: None of us... I don't think anyone saw a back-to-back win for the brand-new duo of Bruno and Anderson.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Nominees:

  • Jon Batiste - We Are
  • Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga - Love for Sale
  • Justin Bieber - Justice (Triple Chucks Deluxe)
  • Doja Cat - Planet Her (Deluxe)
  • Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever
  • H.E.R. - Back of My Mind
  • Lil Nas X - Montero
  • Olivia Rodrigo - SOUR
  • Taylor Swift - Evermore
  • Kanye West - Donda
Winner: Jon Batiste - We Are

Correct: No one! Again! I don't think anyone thought Batiste would pull this off, but he's incredibly deserving. I've been following his career since he soundtracked the jazz portion of Disney's Soul movie, and he's one of the most talented artists of our generation.

Weirdest moment of the night:

This isn't bad weird, but a very strange inclusion -- Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky appeared for a brief message imploring the Grammy attendees and viewers to tell the Ukrainian story. I really don't know what else to say about it, it was just weird.

Best moment of the night:

Lil Nas X was joined by Jack Harlow to perform their hit "INDUSTRY BABY" and it did not disappoint. Their chemistry is incredible, and Nas X is one of the best performers of our generation. They didn't, however, win any awards last night. Lil Nas X had this to say:

Other notable wins and losses (that weren't even televised):

- Tyler, the Creator wins Best Rap Album of the Year for a second time straight when he's been nominated, this time for last year's CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST.

- SZA wins her first Grammy alongside Doja Cat for their collaboration "Kiss Me More," all while sporting crutches for a twisted ankle.

- Although she didn't win album, song, or record of the year, Olivia Rodrigo still cleaned up nicely -- she won Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance, then dropped one on the red carpet. Not bad for her first Grammys.

- Billie Eilish's winning streak was cut short, she went home with nothing last night, probably due to the less-than-good Happier Than Ever.

- Jazmine Sullivan won Best R&B Album and then tied with Silk Sonic for Best R&B performance. Go figure.

- The Foo Fighters were the big winners, securing Best Rock Album, Song, and Performance for the night. A touching moment in lieu of the recent death of their drummer, Taylor Hawkins. They are now the American band with most Grammy wins ever.
