Friday Roundup (of News & Thoughts & Such) - April 22nd

Welcome to the Friday Roundup (of News and Thoughts and Such) which, at some number of consecutive weeks, is channel.WAV’s longest running and most prestigious column, which I, Brandon Slone, am writing at an undisclosed time and location.

1. There’s some kind of Coachella happening?

Coachella, presumably the namesake for David Foster Wallace’s A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again (this joke sucked) has returned after a 2 year hiatus. Nature is healing.

2. A$AP Rocky arrested in connection with 2021 shooting

Rocky is accused of firing “3 or 4” shots at the victim, one of which grazed his left hand, following a confrontation last November. A$AP Rocky is, at present, out on bail.

3. I forgot that Tekashi 6ix9ine existed but he’s back and is as dumb as ever

The formerly popular idiot presently owns around $1 million in debt relating to a 2018 robbery, which he claims has the potential to “surely bankrupt [him] in a way from which [he] will never recover...” Yet in an Instagram post, he flashed what he claimed to be $2 million in cash, along with various other rich people nonsense. He is now violently backpedaling, claiming this to have been “prop money” for “entertainment” purposes. In other words, it’s a work you mark.

4. DaBaby

In 2018, Jonathan Kirk (P/K/A DaBaby) shot and killed teenager Jaylin Craig in a North Carolina Walmart. At the time, nothing much came of the incident and Kirk claimed self defense, which has not stopped him from bragging about it in later tracks but I digress. Anyway, new security footage does a great deal to undercut this defense, showing Kirk striking a friend of Craig, seemingly unprovoked, before Craig pulled his gun. It is not clear just yet what, if anything, will come of this revelation.

5. Harry Styles has a World Record

This is like 3 week old news but I just learned about it literally today so it gets included, because I set the rules of the Roundup. Anyway, “As It Was” is the “Most Streamed Track on Spotify in 24 Hours by a Male Artist.” Well done, Harry. Hi, Kelli.

What’s channel.WAV listening to this week?

Ritter:What’s that thing where you learn about or notice something and then you notice it a lot all at once? I’ve been listening to Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On? Lately and “Inner City Blues” has popped up everywhere since then.

Botts: I’m still blasting Bronco. And you should be too. This one is for the sad bois at heart. (Let Me Drown)
