Friday Roundup (of News & Thoughts & Such) - March 25th

Welcome to the Friday Roundup (of News and Thoughts and Such) which, at some number of consecutive weeks, is channel.WAV’s longest running and most prestigious column, in which I, Brandon Slone, talk about some of the week’s biggest stories that we didn’t cover in long form this week. I’m back, assholes. Let’s dive into this week’s news. This is really the perfect week for this because there’s a lot going on and most of it doesn’t warrant editorializing.

1. MGK didn’t answer a battery lawsuit because he’s just, like, too famous

Machine Gun Kelly, the Travis Barker of Pete Davidsons, stated in a court filing this week that his failure to timely respond to a battery complaint served against him was that he was simply too famous to know about it. In the filing, MGK claims that he was not properly served with the complaint when it was filed in September and that he could not have received notice of same through reading any of the various publications which reported on it in February because he’s just in the headlines so gosh darn much. MGK’s response reads, in part:

“As a result of my profession, there are many stories, accounts, reports and other write-ups citing my stage name, ‘Machine Gun Kelly’ [that] purport to describe activities in which I have been involved. When I followed them regularly, I found that many of the publications ranged from false to only partially true. These publications occur sometimes multiple times each day. As a result, I no longer make it common practice to read publications about me or those that cite to my entertainment name, Machine Gun Kelly, to determine whether or not something therein is truthful, newsworthy or should place me on notice.”

The complaint alleges that MGK “threatened and pushed” a disabled parking lot attendant.

2. Release dates! New music! Teases!

Harry Styles’ new album, Harry’s House, arrives on May 20. This makes me happy.

In other fun news, Kehlani’s Blue Water Road drops even sooner, April 29.

Taylor Swift has also teased the arrival of a new song, “Carolina,” a snippet of which was shared in the trailer for the upcoming film Where the Crawdads Sing.

3. Atlanta season 3 debuts at last

That’s basically music news right? Approximately 109 years after the season 2 finale, Donald Glover’s acclaimed series returned this week with a two-episode season premiere. He’s a rapper. The show has rappers. It’s music news. Fight me. Anyway, I like LaKeith Stanfield a lot. Talented fella.

*Editor's note, LaKeith Stanfield has also made a foray into music, so this is indeed music news.

4. Pusha T and Arby’s give us not the collaboration we need, but the collaboration we deserve

So Pusha T’s most recent headlines have been about a tease of a collab with Lana Del Rey and, respectfully, I don’t care about that.

What I do care about is that I learned this week that Pusha T claims that he wrote the McDonald’s “I’m Lovin’ It” jingle and, after 2 decades, has returned to the fast food arena to collaborate with Arby’s, the meats-havingest fast food chain, for a diss track against the Filet-O-Fish. I hate giving press to this type of corporate PR-tested stuff, but sometimes it’s bizarre enough that I have to stare at it obsessively. “I’m the reason the whole world love it/Now I gotta crush it/Filet-O-Fish is shit/And you should be disgusted,” indeed my friend.

What’s channel.WAV listening to this week?

Ritter: It’s that time of the year where I listen almost exclusively to Jeff Buckley, mourning the loss of one of the most forward thinking and talented artists of our generation.

Also, loving the Charli XCX release from last week, Crash.

Slone: I mostly use this to praise whatever old stuff I’m listening to in a week, but this week I’m gonna put out a recommendation for Sea Power’s new (A month old is still new, yeah?) album, Everything was Forever.

Botts: Ever want to hear a good acoustic guitar that jams and moves your emotions? Well, if you did, see above.

Dane told me I could pie him in the face last week and then I didn’t do it because I forgot about it. Alas, my friends, the moment has passed. As a make good, channel.WAV (Dane) will provide full rebates for the first 5 commenters who send us their Arby’s receipts and for the best McDonald’s diss track left in the comments. I’m offering you financial compensation. Leave a comment. Just do it, friends. It’s not hard. It’s easy. Another bonus for whoever guesses closest to what time I’m typing this.
